Hogan calls on Ottawa to cut Marine Atlantic fees
Premier John Hogan is calling on the Prime Minister to fulfill one of his campaign promises. Mid-way through July now, Hogan says it’s time for the federal government to act swiftly on cutting Marine Atlantic fees by at least half.
Back in April, just before voters cast their ballots in the federal election, Mark Carney committed to lowering costs by at least half for Marine Atlantic. That has yet to happen. In a statement sent to NTV News Marine Atlantic said it would not comment on a federal policy decision.
The service did say that this year compared to last year traffic has increased by 9 percent. That’s an extra 9,000 passengers this so far this year.
St John’s holding seniors party on Wednesday
On Wednesday, there will be a party in the park for seniors by the Bowring Park Bungalow from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The free event for seniors includes local entertainment along with light refreshments, giveaways and more.
The City of St. John’s offers a bus to pick up attendees at selected City Recreation facilities and seniors complexes around the city. Advanced registration and a $6 fee is required for pick up.
A limited number of accessible parking spaces are available on a first-come come first serve basis at the Bowring Park Bungalow.
The inclement weather date will be Thursday, and if the weather is not suitable on July 17, the event will be held indoors at the Shriners Club on Topsail Road.
Woman taken to hospital following assault in St. John’s
At about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, the RNC responded to a report of an assault in progress in the area of Carters Hill Place in St. John’s.
Officers located a 26-year-old female with injuries. The woman was transported to hospital.
Officers were able to identify the suspect and as a result, a 26-year-old man was charged with assault and a breach of release order and a warrant for arrest was requested.
Good driving conditions across the province
Roads across the province this morning are dry with good visibility in most areas, there are some areas of fog along the south coast.
Both Marine Atlantic and provincial ferries are operating on schedule.
At the St. John’s International Airport, Air Canada flights 1946 and 1949 are cancelled. WestJet flights 1051 and 201 are delayed, and PAL Airlines flights 902 and 924 are delayed. At the Deer Lake Regional Airport, Provincial Airlines Flight 924 is delayed. Flights are on time in Gander.
Hot weather continues across the province
It will be another nice day across the Island portion of the province with a mix of sun and cloud expected. For the south coast, some fog is expected this morning. Temperatures will range from 20 to 30, the warmest temperatures will be in the central areas of the Island.

Across Labrador today, there is a risk of thunderstorms for the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area eastward to Cartwright and for southeastern areas. There is a chance of showers for northern coastal areas. Across western Labrador, a mix of sun and cloud is anticipated. Highs will range from 21 to 30.

St. John’s Orangemen’s Day Schedule
St. John’s is observing Orangemen’s Day today. As a result, most City offices will be closed.
Curbside waste collection will still go ahead, and Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility will be open for commercial users.
All City parking bylaws are still in, and street cleaning operations will occur as scheduled.
The Visitor Information Centre at 348 Water Street is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
All recreation facilities will be open, and day camp programs are going ahead. The Bannerman Park and Bowring Park pools will be open. Splash pads at Bowring, Bannerman and Kenmount Park will be open. Public washrooms will be open at Bannerman Park, Bowring Park, Kenmount Park, Quidi Vidi Lake and Kenny’s Pond.
Disability Needs, A Challenge
The majority of persons with disabilities in this country don’t feel their needs are being met. This, according to a new StatsCan study. The finding comes as no surprise for many in this province who continue to work to address those challenges. NTV’s Rosie Mullaley reports.
