News

A 65-year-old man was arrested by Burin Peninsula RCMP on multiple charges after crashing his vehicle, refusing a breath test and resisting arrest last night.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, police responded to a report from a concerned citizen who reported a car crash and a suspected impaired driver. Police attended the scene and found the driver and the described vehicle in the ditch on Highway 210.

At the scene, the driver showed signs of alcohol impairment. The 65-year-old Marystown man resisted arrest and was taken into custody after a short struggle.

Police attempted to obtain a breath sample and the man refused. He continued to be aggressive with officers while under arrest, and was held in custody overnight, where he caused damage to property.

The man will appear in court at a later date to answer to the following charges:

  • Impaired operation,
  • Failure or refusal to comply with a demand,
  • Assault on a police officer – 2 counts,
  • Resisting/Obstructing a police officer – 2 counts,
  • Mischief under $5,000 – Damage to property.

Refusing to comply with a demand issued as part of an impaired operation investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, this offence carries the same penalties as a charge of impaired operation.
