Court closures costly for capital city

News

It’s been two weeks since some of the provinces busiest courtrooms were suddenly shuttered indefinitely. The legal implications are vast. From St. John’s to the south west coast and points in between – traffic, civic, contraventions act and some circuit courts are adjourned. For the provinces capital city, it comes at a great cost. Mayor Danny Breen says tens of thousands of dollars in traffic tickets are tied up in the courts closure and property inspections are also impacted. Breen says if the city needs to acces a home for an inspection and can’t get it, they have to turn to the court. The closure has eliminated that opportunity. Mayor Breen says this continues to present a challenge.
