NL Regiment take 2-1 series lead in QMJHL playoffs

News, Sports

The NL Regiment recorded a huge win on the road Tuesday, defeating Cape Breton 4-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven QMJHL opening round series.

Maxime Sauthier got the home crowd on its feet just 25 seconds into the game as he gave Cape Breton an immediate 1-0 lead. After a back and forth opening period, Alexis Michaud came up with a crucial response just 15 seconds before the first intermission to make it a 1-1 game after the 1st.

Newfoundland took control of the game in the middle frame as Ben Veitch jumped on a friendly bounce eight minutes into the second period before Tyson Goguen also found himself in the right place at the right time six minutes later to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Derek Andrews got one back for the Eagles late in the 2nd to get the hosts within one going into the 3rd but despite some close calls down the stretch, Marek Danicek put the game out of reach as his snipe from the high slot with 3:32 to go in regulation stood as a crucial insurance tally.

Louis-Antoine Denault was stellar in goal for Newfoundland with his 33 saves earning him first star in a massive 4-2 road win.

Game 4 goes tonight in Cape Breton with Game 5 set for Friday.

Gam 6, if necessary, is back at Mary Brown’s Centre.
