NL Regiment to host St. John’s “Shave for the Brave’ event Friday night

News, Sports

Young Adult Cancer Canada’s (YACC) has partnered with the Newfoundland Regiment for a very special Shave for the Brave that will celebrate community and those who give back to this cause. Two special ‘Shavers’ are Scott and Aaron Howell, two of this year’s Shave for the Brave Ambassadors. The Howells are no strangers to Shave for the Brave. Their connection to the event began when Scott’s son, Clark, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

“When Clark started losing his hair from chemo, Geoff [Eaton] and YACC organized an impromptu shave through Mount Pearl Minor Hockey. It meant the world to us. From that moment on, we stayed connected through Clark’s treatment, recovery, relapse, and eventually his passing in 2021,” Scott said. “Shave for the Brave means a lot to Aaron and me. Every event brings mixed emotions. At first there’s always some sadness as we think about Clark’s journey and everything he went through, but we always leave feeling uplifted. Seeing people step up, shave their heads, and raise money for such an incredible charity is powerful, and it’s a reminder of how much good there is in this community.”

The Howells have raised over $9,000 for this year’s event, and will be joined by people from other minor hockey teams and the Shave community. Shave for the Brave supports Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC), a national organization based in St. John’s that offers support, programs, and community to those diagnosed with cancer before the age of 40 and are currently between 18-39. Programs like Localife St.
John’s, YACC Chats, Writing It Out, and Retreat Yourself Adventure help YACC’s members connect with peers who have similar lived experiences, find a way out of the isolation cancer can bring, and inspire them as they live with, through, and beyond cancer.
