Bonavista RCMP charges ATV operator with Off-Road Vehicle Act offences
Bonavista RCMP seized an off-road vehicle on Friday after the operator was found traveling a highway without a valid insurance policy. The operator was also ticketed for operating without a driver’s licence.
Around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, police on patrol in Catalina observed an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) traveling along Route 230 before stopping at a gas station. An officer recognized the operator — a 56-year-old man — and stopped him, as he did not have a valid driver’s licence.
The operator left the scene on foot, and police seized and impounded the ATV for traveling on the highway without an insurance policy. The driver was later issued a ticket under the Off-Road Vehicle Act for operating an off-road vehicle on a highway without a valid driver’s licence.
Off-road vehicle operators are reminded that they are responsible for understanding and abiding by all applicable laws outlined in the Off-Road Vehicle Act and Highway Traffic Act. As winter weather arrives in the province, police are also reminding all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians that snowmobiles (ski-doos) are also considered off-road vehicles under the Act.
