Man arrested after allegedly ramming RNC cruiser

Justice, News

A 35-year-old man is facing numerous charges after allegedly ramming a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary cruiser during a traffic stop before fleeing police and setting the vehicle on fire.

According to the RNC, the incident happened around 10:35 p.m. Saturday, when officers stopped a vehicle on Ashgrove Drive. Police say the driver provided a false name before putting the vehicle in reverse without warning and striking the police cruiser. The driver then fled the scene, nearly hitting officers in the process.

A short time later, officers responded to a vehicle fire and determined it was the same vehicle involved in the earlier incident.

Police searched the surrounding area with the assistance of a police dog service, drones and officers on foot. The suspect was eventually found hiding nearby and arrested.

The 35-year-old man is charged with flight from police, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, public mischief, arson and assaulting a peace officer.
