The Overview

An area of low pressure will track near/over the Avalon Peninsula Friday night into early Saturday. This will cause snow, ice, and rain to fall across the island’s eastern half during the time frame. The Avalon, Burin, and Bonavista Peninsulas will see snow and ice this evening and transition to rain overnight as warmer air moves in. To the west, mostly snow will fall overnight. The snow and ice, in all areas, will be heavy at times. The rain may be briefly heavy overnight for locations that see it. This will all wrap up early Saturday morning, and it will not be a significant weather event in the grand scheme of things. A SWS (Special Weather Statement) is in effect for a large part of eastern Newfoundland that states up to 15 cm of snow and ice is possible over the area.

Eastern areas will see snow for several hours this evening changing to rain after midnight through a period of ice pellets. This visual timeline should help you time it all out. Overall this is a relatively minor event.

Future Radar will give you a better idea of what we can expect with the snow, ice and rain over the area tonight into early Saturday morning. Remember that blue is snow, green is rain and purple and pink represent ice pellets and freezing rain. Notice how most of the precipitation is done by 7 or 8 AM tomorrow.

Snowfall amounts will not be prolific overnight into early Saturday, but it will be enough that many of us have to shovel in the morning. Expect a rough 5-15 cm across the eastern half of the Island, with up to 20 cm found in a narrow swath from Bonavista Bay back toward the Connaigre Peninsula.

Temperatures overnight, tomorrow, Sunday, and even Monday will not move much across the Province. Expect highs near the freezing mark on the Island over the next couple of days and well below in Labrador.

There will be one more area of snow that moves in late Saturday night into Sunday morning and this will bring a little more snow and/or ice to the eastern and Central parts of the Island. Only a few centimeters are expected, and hopefully, it will freshen things up for the new year a bit.

Overall, however, the weather will be quiet as we ring in the New Year across the Province and there are no major systems in the forecast for the next 5 to 7 days.
