One man is dead following an unusual incident in downtown St. John’s early Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the corner of Water Street and Adelaide Street shortly after 5 a.m. following initial reports of a motor vehicle-pedestrian collision.

Upon investigation of the incident, it was determined no vehicle was involved. However, a critically-injured person lay in the street among debris from a broken street light.

Paramedics with Eastern Health took the individual to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has confirmed a 26-year-old man from Mount Pearl as the victim of this incident.

Witness reports from the scene indicate the individual may have been climbing on a traffic light pole when the incident took place. While RNC investigators have not confirmed the circumstances around the incident, they did say the situation is not believed to be suspicious.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
