Nain RCMP conduct traffic checkpoint, impaired driver arrested
A 24-year-old driver is facing criminal charges for failing to comply with a demand issued as part of an impaired driving investigation on Saturday, which was National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
Just before 11:00 p.m. on Dec. 6, Nain RCMP officers were conducting a traffic checkpoint along Sandbanks Road in Nain as part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. A vehicle pulled up to the police roadblock, and the operator displayed signs of alcohol impairment and failed a roadside breath test.
The 24-year-old Nain man was arrested and transported to the detachment, where he refused to provide further breath samples to police.
The man was arrested for impaired refusal and his driver’s licence was suspended. He was later released to appear in court on Feb. 10 to face charges of impaired operation and failing or refusing to comply with a breath demand.
Refusing to comply with a demand issued as part of an impaired driving investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, the penalties of refusal are the same as a conviction of impaired driving.
