Police say the investigation into a fire that started at an abandoned commercial property in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Friday evening and caused a number of residents to vacate their properties is continuing. 

A number of explosions occurred before the fire was controlled.  No one was injured. At approximately 7:15 p.m. on April 19, 2024, Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP was informed of a large structure fire on Halifax Street.  The fire spread to an adjacent building and was burning out of control.

With a number of flammable substances nearby, area residents were asked to vacate their homes and the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay declared a state of emergency.

Firefighters with Happy Valley-Goose Bay Fire Department and the Canadian Forces Base battled the blaze.  Two commercial buildings were completely destroyed and a number of other properties were damaged.  Although not yet assessed, estimated damages are considered to be extensive.

A Fire Scene Investigator with Fire Services Division of Justice and Public Safety attended the scene.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
