RNC warns of romance scams this Valentine’s weekend

Justice, News

The RNC is urging the public to be vigilant against Valentine’s romance scams.

Criminals prey on people’s emotions to cash in on affection by targeting those seeking companionship on social media, dating websites, and messaging apps. Fraudsters create fake identities to build trust and romantic relationships with victims before claiming to need money quickly, most often citing a medical emergency, legal fees, travel expenses, or other bills. Requests for money are often made through untraceable means including cash, wire transfer, gift cards, bitcoin, or cryptocurrency.

Before you fall head over heels, the RNC wants to make sure you are not falling for fraud. To protect yourself from a romance scam:

  • Never send money or share financial information with those you have not met in person.
  • Be cautious if the relationship is moving too fast.
  • Be suspicious if you are asked to keep the request for money a secret.

Anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to fraud is urged to stop communication immediately and save all correspondence. Report to the RNC by calling 709-729-8000.
