According to a statement from the Department of Environment, since Saturday, the province has been in active discussions with a number of departments to ensure the safe and secure disposal of the organic waste and to mitigate any risks associated with the St. Mary’s fish sauce plant.  That’s after high winds caused significant structural damage to one side of the abandoned plant.

On Monday departmental officials from Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, Municipal and Community Affairs, and Transportation and Infrastructure, will be on the ground in St. Mary’s to meet with Mayor Ryan and the St. Mary’s Town Council. Discussions will focus on assessment, next steps, and ensuring the safety and well being of residents as decisions are made.

The Atlantic Seafood Sauce Company Ltd. building sits on the shoreline of St. Mary’s, just steps away from the ocean. It first opened in 1990, but was abandoned nearly a decade later.
