Placentia RCMP issues public advisory to use caution following local archaeological find

News

Police are reminding the public to use caution and immediately report the discovery of any possible munitions, after the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was called to a Jerseyside home this week.

On March 30, 2026, the Provincial Archeologist contacted Placentia RCMP to report several cannonballs that were uncovered during property renovations at a Jerseyside home adjacent to a known archeological site.

Although cannonballs are commonly hard steel balls, they can be hollow inside and loaded with explosive black powder and should reported like any other possible munition. The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was engaged and attended the home to safely remove and dispose of the items.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s military history has led to the discovery and recovery of munitions in many parts of the province. However, these artifacts can be extremely dangerous when handled.

If you discover any form of weapon or munition, please do not handle or move it. For your safety, and the safety of others, immediately contact your local police department, and provide the location of the item and a description. This will ensure that the proper authorities are engaged and that the item can be recovered and disposed of safely.
