NDP calls for intimate partner violence to be labeled epidemic
The provincial NDP is calling for answers, asking questions they would be raising directly if the House of Assembly were currently in session.
MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, Sheilagh O’Leary says Premier Tony Wakeham has refused to open the House of Assembly for the fall sitting. While the NL NDP understands the current administration is still new to the job, there’s still important work to do.
Here is the question that MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, Sheilagh O’Leary would have asked in Question Period today:
“Speaker, December 6th marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We remember the Montreal Massacre and the 14 women who were murdered in a brutal, anti-feminist attack.”
“As we continue the Purple Ribbon Campaign, we must confront the reality that Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the highest rates of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in the country. This crisis disproportionately impacts women, gender-diverse people, and marginalized communities.”
“For years, advocates have warned that shelters, transitional housing, and frontline services remain chronically underfunded. As a result, too many women and families living with IPV are left with no safe options and nowhere to turn.”
“So, I ask the Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality: Will you finally declare IPV an epidemic in this province, and will you commit to a comprehensive investment plan for transition houses and women’s shelters – so that no woman in Newfoundland and Labrador is forced to remain in a violent home because the supports simply do not exist?”
