Evacuation alerts for Galway and Southlands, while ‘significant losses’ reported as wildfire spreads to Ochre Pit Cove and Western Bay
Evacuation alerts have been expanded to Galway and Southlands after the Paddy’s Pond fire spread farther south, Premier John Hogan announced Tuesday. The news comes along with word of “significant losses” as the Conception Bay North fire has spread into Ochre Pit Cove and Western Bay, but there are still no numbers on the extent of property lossesResidents in Galway and Southlands are asked to prepare to evacuate if necessary. After the evacuation alerts issued for parts of C.B.S. and Paradise Monday night, that brings the total number of people affected to about 18,000-20,000.Public Safety Minister John Haggie says if an evacuation of these region is necessary, they will be done in a phased approach with areas closer to the fire evacuated first.Post Views: 15 -
Intoxicated man sleeping near hotel dumpsters arrested
At 6:42 p.m. on Monday evening, the RNC responded to a call for service at a center city hotel that reported a male on the ground, possibly asleep by their dumpsters.Officers attended and located a man who was intoxicated and angry.During police interactions, the accused grabbed an officer’s leg, trying to pull him to the ground.Officers arrested the 34-year-old male and charged him with assaulting a police officer, mischief, property damage for kicking and causing damage to a police vehicle and breach of a release order.The accused was then conveyed to the city lock-up, where he is held for court.Post Views: 129 -
Paddy’s Pond Fire remains out of control
This morning, the Paddy’s Pond Fire remains out of control.An evacuation alert remains in effect for portions of Paradise and Conception Bay South.This includes the area on the south side of Topsail Road from the Outer Ring Road exit to the CBS boundary and all properties east of the Manuels River Bridge.Residents in the advisory area should be prepared to leave on short notice.Traffic congestion remains a concern. Stay off local roads unless absolutely necessary. Last night, the RNC had to use resources due to heavy traffic heading toward the Minerals Road/Talc Mine area to watch the fire.Do not stop on Peacekeepers Way to take photos.
