Bail hearing continues this week in murder case

A man accused of killing a man in the centre of St. John’s last winter will soon find out if he’ll be freed from jail while his case winds its way through the courts.

Robert Belbin’s bail hearing got underway last week in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John’s.

He’s charged with second-degree murder after he reportedly killed 22-year-old Seamus Secord on Feb. 7, 2023.

The incident is believed to have happened in the area of Mayor Avenue, where Secord was found seriously injured and was rushed to hospital. He later succumb to his injuries. Investigators haven’t said how he died.

Belbin has a preliminary inquiry is set for June.

Justice Peter O’Flaherty is hearing Belbin’s bail hearing, which is scheduled to continue Tuesday.
