Massive basking shark spotted off Isle aux Morts Sunday morning
It was a jaw-dropping sight on Newfoundland’s southwest coast Sunday morning.
While out cod fishing off Isle aux Morts, Wade Huelin came face-to-face with one of the ocean’s true giants – a massive basking shark he estimates measured almost 30 feet long.
The incredible encounter happened around 7:30 Sunday morning, but that wasn’t all. Huelin says he spotted not one, but five mature basking sharks in the same area.
Basking sharks are regular summer and fall visitors to our waters, usually feeding off plankton, although they’re most commonly seen along the province’s northeast coast, around White Bay and Notre Dame Bay.
The son of a longtime fisherman, Huelin’s father often encountered basking sharks tangled in salmon nets years ago, and that can become a dangerous situation. That’s why he shut off the motor on his boat as a precaution.
For Wade Huelin, it was an incredible experience — and one he was lucky enough to capture on camera.
