West winds return to Newfoundland, so too does the snow squalls for the West Coast

There is a slight warm up happening in Labrador Friday, after the coldest day of the year for some northern regions on Thursday.

Gone is the -51 wind chill for Labrador City and Wabush as Friday benefits from some low-pressure and low wind. -14 Friday afternoon should feel just that.

The same can’t be said for the island portion of the province. West wind returns, dropping the temperatures back to seasonal, specifically on the Avalon.

That wind once again will whip the snow around the West Coast in the form of squalls, although, with lighter wind – the squalls will be more moderate and do not activate the same snow squall alert from Environment Canada.

From the West Coast through to the Baie Verte Peninsula, totals range 5-10 cm, with the higher terrain areas on the coast aiming for the higher end of that range.

A few flurries and moments of light snow pass over the rest of the island, accumulating a centimeter or less, surrounding a day of sun and cloud. Late Friday evening, a pocket of snow looks to pass over the Avalon with the potential to drop 1-3 cm to close out the week.

The same 1-3 cm will be dispersed across parts of the island Saturday, with cooler temperatures as the west wind persists. Corner Brook and the West Coast is facing another 5-10 cm to start the weekend. Again, that will fall acorss the island surrounded by a day of sun and cloud.
