Temperatures drop across Newfoundland Friday with high winds making for another messy mix

Weather

Here we go again, only backwards this time. Another big swing in temperatures paired with a wind change brings the conditions into another messy mix across Newfoundland on Friday.

South wind continues to gust over the Avalon to start Friday, however, that cooler west wind on the West Coast spends the day travelling right across Newfoundland. This will not only drop the temperatures back below zero along the way, but transition the rain back into freezing rain and snow for parts as well.

Temperatures dropping across Newfoundland as rain turns back into ice and snow

The Northern Peninsula is the first to drop, doing so overnight. By the mid morning, the West Coast is back under zero while most of Central and the Baie Verte Peninsula follows suit by mid afternoon.

As that temperature is falling below zero, you’ll see the transition in conditions as well.

Mainly rain for Eastern Newfoundland Friday

The snow eases as it moves west to east, more so building south to north. The totals will reflect his across Central, Southern and Northeastern Newfoundland.

The south wind, and temperature, holds for the eastern side long enough for the day to be spent mostly under rain, drizzle and fog with some moments of mixed precipitation, flurries at the worst, in the evening.

Friday’s snow and rain totals for Newfoundland and Labrador

Wind alert issued for Avalon Peninsula Friday

Both the wind causing the warm up and cool down comes with a bit of a bite Friday. For Newfoundland and coastal Labrador. The strongest winds will be felt Friday afternoon and into the evening with the Burin, Avalon and Bonavista Peninsula along with the Kittiwake Coast, Fogo Island and coastal Labrador having the potential to breach the 100 km/h mark.

Snow squalls for West and South Coast Newfoundland Friday night

With the wind picking up into the evening pretty well province wide, and it being a west wind off the water for the West and South Coast, it’s looking as though snow squalls are likely for the final touches of snow Friday night.
