More snow on the way for Newfoundland Thursday
Ryan Harding, NTV Weather Centre
Gone is the biting west wind for Newfoundland, replaced by a more seasonal southwest wind. The reward for gritting through the nipping wind chills? Some more snow.
We’re starting off Thursday province-wide with some sun and cloud and temperatures slowly, but surely, warming. Not enough to hold off the snow, however, as that first makes landfall along the South Coast near the lunch hour.

By 3 pm, that snow is creeping into the West Coast and Burin Peninsula. It’s a relatively quick-moving low-pressure system, brining limited totals. It’s trending towards a snowy commute home for most, breaching the Metro region and most of Central by 6 pm.

By then, that south wind is doing it’s thing – warming temperatures and offering a moving transition line of freezing rain into rain for the southern and eastern portion of the island – ending the Burin and Avalon Peninsula’s Thursday with a bit of a messy mix. The outer bands of the system brush the Northern Peninsula and South Coast of Labrador for a smaller and later snowfall.

While the winds throughout shouldn’t reach near the gusts of systems past – the back end Thursday evening does bring the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon Peninsula back into the 60-80 km/h range.

Meanwhile, Labrador’s three-day forecast is filled with a sun and cloud mix. Starting Thursday morning, those -40’s wind chills will be replaced in Labrador West, with warmer winds moving east, relieving the coast line of the deep -30’s felt Wednesday. In terms of the 3-day forecast below, the west snow on Friday is an easy 1 cm and Saturday’s north snow is nothing more than flurries to this point.
