Wabush Airport runway reopens with limited flights

Local News, News, Travel

Wabush Airport has reopened after four days of closures, stranding travellers with little help. The runway suffered flash freezing during extreme weather last week and crews were unable to keep up with the maintenance to clear it. That left hundreds of people waiting to get home for the holidays or return home to Labrador West and surrounding areas.

PAL Airlines had said in a social media post that passengers would be offered accommodation but some passengers took to social media over Sunday and Monday to say they hadn’t received any information on that. Others called for PAL to provide bussing to Churchill Falls or Happy Valley Goose Bay, something the airline said it had arranged later Monday.

By 5pm the airport had reopened its runway allowing some of the backlogged passengers to get out but In a social media post on Monday evening, PAL Airlines said there could be further disruptions.
