Two men arrested, weapon seized after flight from police in Rocky Harbour
Two men were arrested after they fled from police and barricaded themselves inside a residence in Woody Point. A 35-year-old man and a 20-year-old man face a number of charges including flight from police.
On August 17, around 6:30 a.m., Rocky Harbour RCMP responded to a call of a female in distress in Woody Point. The woman was transported to hospital by emergency medical services personnel for a full medical assessment and treatment. As part of the investigation, officers attempted to stop two men travelling by car, but the vehicle fled from police. In the interest of public and police safety, the officers did not pursue.
The vehicle was later spotted by Deer Lake RCMP at the scene of a disturbance at an Irving gas station. A second traffic stop was attempted, but the suspects failed to stop and fled eastbound down the Trans-Canada Highway.
The men were located several hours later at a home on Water Street in Woody Point. They barricaded themselves inside the home with a third person, and refused to exit for police. RCMP Police Dog Services and a critical incident commander were engaged, and the public was asked to avoid the area.
All three individuals surrendered to police without further incident and were taken into custody. A search of the home and vehicle resulted in the seizure of a BB pistol.
Twenty-year-old Joshua Roberts was held in custody to appear before the courts. He has been charged with the following offences:
- Flight from police;
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- Carrying a concealed weapon;
- Failure to comply with a Probation Order
A 34-year-old man was released on conditions and is expected to appear in court at a future date. A woman who was also taken into custody was later released without charge.
The investigation remains ongoing and further charges are possible.
