Two dead after vessel sinks off Baie Verte Peninsula
Condolences continue to pour in after two fishermen were pronounced dead following the sinking of a fishing vessel off the Baie Verte Peninsula. The tragedy has left families, friends and communities across Newfoundland and Labrador mourning the devastating loss.
Premier Tony Wakeham offered condolences to the families and loved ones of the two fishermen, calling their deaths an “unimaginable loss.” He said the tragedy is being felt not only across the Baie Verte Peninsula but throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, adding that his thoughts are also with the survivor and everyone affected as the community grieves.
According to the Canadian Coast Guard at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time yesterday, Tuesday, July 21, the Canadian Coast Guard received a report of a sunken vessel with three people missing near Brent’s Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Canadian Coast Guard issued a mayday broadcast for vessels of opportunity to respond and the CCGS Conception Bay, a fixed wing aircraft and the Cormorant helicopter were tasked to the area.
A vessel of opportunity recovered two people from the water, one survivor and one deceased. The Cormorant helicopter recovered one deceased person from the shoreline.

Baie Verte RCMP had been asking the public to avoid the Harbour Round wharf at this time, as police and partners completed a marine operation in the area on Tuesday. NTV News will have more information as it becomes available.
