Tony Humby trial to continue into 2026; case back in court today to schedule more dates

Justice, News

The trial of Tony Humby, the St. John’s man accused of a number of sex-related offences, will continue into the new year.

Humby has pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges, including sexual assault, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. They involve at least 12 complainants, dating back decades. Humby’s trial has been ongoing for months, and the crown is close to wrapping up its case, with three witnesses left to testify.

On Friday, defence lawyer Mark Gruchy asked for – and was granted – a delay. The case will be called again Tuesday to schedule more dates for the new year. It’s alleged Humby, who’s 64, and his neighbour, 82-year-old Bruce Escott, worked together to abuse the youth, offering them alcohol, drugs and cash in exchange for sexual favours.

Escott pleaded guilty to seven sex-related charges and earlier this month, was given a 13-year sentence.
