Local News, News

Firefighters say a fire at Robin Hood Bay landfill is now under control.

Shortly after lunchtime on Sunday a large plume of smoke could be seen bellowing from near Robin Hood Bay Landfill in St. John’s.

The smoke filled the air in the east of the city, surrounding communities may notice visible smoke late into the afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued an air quality statement for the area, which includes but is not limited to:

  • East End of St. John’s
  • St. John’s International Airport
  • Torbay
  • Logy Bay
  • Outer Cove

Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off air exchangers and HVAC units to help reduce indoor smoke exposure. Please contact 811 or see a health-care provider if you experience any concerning symptoms related to smoke exposure such as a severe cough, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and/or wheezing.

Residents are reminded to continue to monitor active air quality statements on the Environment Canada website.

While the cause has not been confirmed, rechargeable batteries are a known fire risk in the landfill. Residents are reminded not to place batteries in garbage or recycling. Instead, batteries and other household hazardous waste should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at Robin Hood Bay or to other approved drop-off locations.
