RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador conduct province-wide weekend checkstops
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador set up nearly a dozen checkstops last weekend as part of its ongoing efforts to deter, detect and prevent impaired driving and enhance road safety.
Over the weekend, and into the early part of this week, RCMP checkstops were set up across the island of Newfoundland from Margaree by the Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP to Burnt Cove by the Ferryland RCMP detachment, and from Conception Harbour by the Holyrood RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services East to Kippens by the Bay St. George RCMP. In total, more than 450 vehicles were checked by police.
The majority of drivers were found to be sober, safe and operating legally, however, enforcement action was taken in several instances. A small number of tickets were issued under the Highway Traffic Act for offences such as failing to wear a seat belt and driving without valid insurance, while warnings were also issued for various other infractions. At least one driver was required to provide a roadside breath test, which was passed.
