Province warns residents to be ready for heavy rain, high winds
The provincial government is monitoring forecast information of a strong weather system that is anticipated to affect a significant portion of Newfoundland and Labrador for the next few days.
Environment Canada has issued wind and rainfall warnings, as well as special weather statements as an intense low-pressure system will bring heavy rain, high winds and coastal flooding to many areas throughout the province. Residents are encouraged to monitor Environment Canada for the most up-to-date information for your area.
Numerous areas are expected to receive rainfall amounts as high as 50 millimetres, as well as wind gusts upwards of 120 kilometres per hour. Coastal flooding, including storm surges, is likely in low-lying areas from the south coast of the island, along the northeast coast, as far north as Nain.
Similar conditions in the past have caused travel disruptions, isolated power outages and wind damage. Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Homeowners should secure loose items around their properties (outdoor furniture), ensure sump pumps are in working order, and safeguard important documents.
Motorists are reminded to check driving conditions and ferry updates via the NL511 mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511. Always drive according to the conditions, and never cross floodwaters on foot or in a vehicle as the water may be deeper than it looks.
While the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to Level 1 – Enhanced Monitoring, no action is required from emergency management partners at this time. Municipalities and local service districts should review emergency management plans, and ensure infrastructure such as roads, ditches and drains are clear of debris.
