Plane crash near Paddy’s Pond sends two people to hospital; TSB to investigate
Emergency personnel with multiple agencies descended on the Paddy’s Pond area late Saturday evening after a small plane crashed into the woods.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m. emergency crews responded to a section of the Trans Canada Highway near Paddy’s Pond after reports a small plane had crashed near the highway. It took some time to find the wrecked aircraft, but with help from another local pilot crews were able to reach the wreckage. It was located roughly 150 metres from the highway, in a boggy area, just west of Paddy’s Pond.
Ed Sears, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), said that the two men who were on board the small single-engine plane were able to get out on their own. While one man was able to walk to a nearby roadway, the second was helped to a small helicopter, which was used to transport the man to a clearing near shore of the pond. Both men were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be serious.
The event garnered response from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, SJRFD, NL Health Services, Rovers Search and Rescue, as well as officials with the Department of Forestry. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has also been summoned to investigate the crash, which is said to have caused extensive damage to the aircraft.
The westbound lanes of the Trans Canada Highway, as well as Paddy’s Pond Road, were closed to traffic for a while to facilitate the rescue efforts.
