East-end house fire displaces multiple people
A fire in the east end of St. John’s on Sunday evening has displaced multiple people.
Shortly before 9:00 p.m. firefighters were called to a home on Kildare Place. When crews arrived on the scene smoke was coming from the home. Jeff Hatcher, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), said that a fire had started near a bathroom vent fan, scorching the area around it. While the fire itself caused little damage, firefighters were forced to tear down the entire bathroom ceiling to ensure no hot spots remained in the nearby cellulose insulation. A smouldering spark can ignite a fire in that material hours later.
No injuries were reported, however upwards of ten people have been displaced from the two-unit home. The Salvation Army was called to assist those affected.
