Evacuation order lifted for 19 homes in Paradise
Update: The Town of Paradise advises that the situation on Brisbane Court is resolved.
Brisbane Court and Starlight Drive are reopened to all traffic and residents can return to their homes. As a result, the Town’s warming centre is now closed. Crews isolated the incident, vacuumed and flushed the storm sewer system in the area, and that resolved the issue. Residents may still notice a fuel smell in the area or in their homes; this will dissipate naturally and does not present any safety concerns. For any residents who have a fuel smell in their houses, they can open their windows and can turn on water taps and flush toilets. Crews will remain on site throughout the evening to monitor the situation.
Original Story:
The Town of Paradise says some homes on Brisbane Court had to be evacuated Thursday.
Residents in the area reported a smell of gas in their homes. The St. John’s Regional Fire Department and town crews were called to the site where 19 homes were evacuated. Fuel was found in the storm sewer in the area and that is believed to be the cause smell in the homes. Crews are working to remediate the site.
The town says Brisbane Court and Starlight Drive are closed to all traffic, but residents can return to their homes if needed. The town is offering a warming room at the Paradise Double Ice Complex and any displaced residents who need assistance can proceed to that location. The area is being assessed, and a further update will be provided later this afternoon.
