The proposed amendments to the Schools Act was presented for a second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday.

If passed, the amendments will pave the way for the transition of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District into the Provincial Government.

Changes to the Act include dissolving the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, updating powers of the Minister to include regulatory making authority, and removing reference to a board and replacing with the Crown, or the department and the conseil scolaire as applicable.

The final stages of the integration process should be completed by the end of this year.
