FFAW to meet with Premier Wakeham Tuesday

Business, News

Members of the province’s fisheries union will meet with Premier Tony Wakeham on Tuesday after sharing its disappointment with the end of season settlement for snow crab. The rebate, which was announced Thursday afternoon, would see harvesters receive an additional 28 cents per pound on this season’s price, but the union says its members are being robbed of over $100 million.

During Friday’s meeting, the FFAW gave four demands, including preventing anyone with a processing license from being able to ship out unprocessed crab, implementing penalties for companies found colluding, establishing a new price-setting process based on the market price, and addressing competition for processing licenses.

Premier Wakeham will meet with representatives tomorrow morning to continue discussions on items outlined by the union. The department says it committed to keeping open lines of communication with all of its fishery stakeholders
