Dominion to close supermarket at former Memorial Stadium site in May

Business, News

The Dominion supermarket at the former Memorial Stadium site in St. John’s is expected to close in May.

A source with the City of St. John’s says the city has no ownership of the site anymore, but they understand Loblaws will be closing the store by May. They say there is no firm indication of future plans.

The news comes almost 20 years after a contentious battle to rezone the former hockey stadium so it could be converted into a supermarket. Memorial Stadium had served as a hockey arena since 1955, but was left vacant when the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs moved to Mile One Centre in 2001. Loblaws bought the property for $2.8 million and reopened it as a supermarket in 2007 after a years-long battle over the future of the site within City Council chambers.
