PM Mark Carney travelling to China for meetings next week; first time for a PM since 2017
The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed to CTV that Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to China from Jan. 13-17 to elevate engagement on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security.
This visit marks the first visit to China by a Canadian Prime Minister since 2017.
Currently in Paris for talks on Ukraine, Carney told reporters Tuesday his government is working to expand access to oil markets in Asia now that Canada faces the possibility of Venezuelan oil displacing Canadian product in the American market.
U.S. President Donald Trump made global headlines over the weekend after capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military raid. Trump says he plans to take control of the country’s oil industry and encourage American companies to revitalize the sector.
