Worker injured after heavy casing falls during lifting incident on Hibernia platform
The Hibernia Management and Development Company is investigating another serious safety incident aboard the Hibernia Platform.
At approximately 5:05 am, a pipe deck crew was preparing 9 5/8-inch casing joints – each weighing approximately 2100 lbs – for transfer to the rig in support of drilling operations. During lifting operations with a gantry crane, two casing joints separated from the crane’s magnets while suspended approximately two metres (6.6 feet) above the pipe deck and fell to the deck below.
One of the casing joints contacted the lower left leg of a worker who was positioned in the area at the time of the incident. The worker was transported onshore for further medical evaluation.
Regulators say the incident had the potential to be fatal and comes just two months after another potential fatality incident on the platform in May. An investigation into the cause is now underway.
