Police investigating additional targeted attack on communications tower
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) are investigating yet another fire described as a targeted attack on communications infrastructure.
At about 7:15 p.m. Monday evening firefighters were called to the Bell Mobility communication tower site on Nagle’s Place in Pippy Park. When crews arrived they found fire and smoke coming from a structure at the base of the tower, with smoke coming from the tower itself.
Mike Hall, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), stated that the structure and the equipment inside was destroyed, with equipment inside the tower itself also sustaining extensive damage. The fire is said to have affected cellular service in the area, with users and service providers leaning on surrounding towers for service.
The RNC called on Police Dog Services as well as a drone operator to search for the person(s) responsible.
The fire comes on the same day police said they were investigating several suspicious fires in the metro region over the weekend. The fires are believed to be targeting communication towers and pole line areas, and include locations in Shea Heights and Kenmount Hill.
