Local News, News

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are investigating a fire that damaged a building in Victoria Park late Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the park shortly after 11:30 p.m.. Ed Sears, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) said initially they received a call about a garbage fire, however a short time later a second call came in saying the same fire was approaching the eaves of the Victoria Park Pool House.

Accessing the scene from Angel Place, off Alexander Street, crews arrived to find fire consuming an exterior portion of the building. Firefighters had to cut into the building in several places to find and extinguish hot spots. Crews were on scene for over an hour ensuring the fire was out.

The Pool House serves as a headquarters for the Friends of Victoria Park, Lantern Festival, and summer day camps. The building sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. It was unknown at the time how services will be affected.
