Update: Torbay home consumed by fire on Sunday evening
A home in Torbay was completely leveled by fire on Sunday evening.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m. the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) was notified of a fire on Woodbridge Lane in Torbay. TVFD Chief Rodney Gaudet said that when crews arrived on the scene there was already heavy smoke and fire coming from the home. Portions of the roof quickly started collapsing, forcing firefighters to fight the blaze from outside the home.
Through mutual aid agreements, fire crews from the Portugal Cove-St. Philips Volunteer Fire Department and the Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department were also summoned to help battle the blaze. At times flames could be seen shooting several storeys into the air, and smoke from the fire could be seen from many kilometres away.
With no fire hydrants in the area, water had to be trucked to the scene. An excavator was also brought in to tear down the external walls of the home to allow water to reach fire deep within the remains of the home.
Chief Gaudet said that no one was home at the time of the blaze, and it was unknown exactly how many residents are now displaced. One firefighter was injured during the firefighting efforts, and received treatment from paramedics. It wasn’t known at the time if they were taken to hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
