Spring-like Friday for Newfoundland and Labrador before winter returns for some over weekend

Weather

Ryan Harding, NTV Weather Centre

Sunny skies break free once again Friday across Newfoundland and Labrador with temperatures on the rise under southwest winds. There is a quick drop off in temperature tonight, however, leading into a weekend of moments with the mix of snow and rain.

Outside of some very light and brief flurries along the Northern Peninsula Friday afternoon, the week ends with open skies and plenty of sun.

It’s the southern wind, with a high-pressure system, clearing the skies and fueling the spring-like warm up. That wind though looks to pick up to quite the pace along the west coast, gusting anywhere from 60-100 km/h.

Friday’s daytime highs for Newfoundland

Moments of messy mix Friday night sign of things to come for Newfoundland’s weekend

All good things must come to and end. So, as the temperature drops Friday evening in Newfoundland, a mixed precipitation makes land fall as rain with some moments of freezing rain and wet snow along the West Coast and moving north.

This sets the table for a mix of rain and snow into Saturday and Sunday with the Northern Peninsula on the docket for 10-15 cm of snow Saturday.

More details on this tonight on First Edition at 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm on the NTV Evening Newshour.

Final flurries in Labrador Friday transition as temperatures rise

Labrador benefits from south winds as well on Friday, warming a large portion of The Big Land above zero. This means those final flurries, specifically along the coastline, are likely to transition before the back end of the day starts to see the skies open.
