Travellers paying more as jet fuel prices soar
Travellers should expect spring air travel to get more expensive as the price of jet fuel due to the conflict in the Middle East has led two of Canada’s largest airlines to add fuel surcharges. Air Canada has introduced a $50 per passenger surcharge on Air Canada vacation packages.
Meanwhile, starting April 8, West Jet is adding a temporary fuel surcharge of $60 on all bookings made with a companion voucher. As for regular fares, WestJet says airfares reflect current operating costs which fluctuate based on market supply and demand. The airline says fuel prices have continued to rise, and fares have adjusted accordingly.
The airline is also reducing flights through the spring, with 406 fewer April flights, and about 1,000 fewer flights in May. The airline says it has not made any layoffs as a result of the rise in fuel prices.
