Messy winter storm to slam Avalon Peninsula with upwards of 40 cm of snow, strong winds

News, Weather

A messy winter storm is expected to hit the Avalon Peninsula starting this evening and lasting into Tuesday afternoon, with a high-impact warning in effect.

Snowfall totals of 20 to 40 cm are expected, along with strong easterly winds gusting up to 60 to 70 km/h. Heavy snow at times, with rates over 5 cm per hour, will lead to poor visibility and blowing snow overnight and into Tuesday morning.

As temperatures rise Tuesday, the snow will change to ice pellets, freezing rain, and then rain, creating slippery and hazardous conditions. Tuesday night, temperatures will drop again, bringing a return to snow along with increasing northwesterly winds and more blowing snow.

Travel is expected to be very difficult, and people are advised to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.
