Calm, cooler day across Newfoundland and Labrador Wednesday before messy end of week

Weather

Ryan Harding, NTV Weather Centre

Once some overnight flurries clear early Wednesday morning, the runway is there for plenty of sun across Newfoundland and Labrador. It does, however, come under colder conditions compared to Tuesday’s borderline warm temperatures as the wind shifts back northwest, erasing the tease of spring. Wednesday’s sentiment, province-wide, is sunny but cold.

Snow, freezing rain and rain stretches across Newfoundland and Labrador Wednesday night through Friday

Wednesday night the reminder that winter isn’t over yet arrives and, in part, will remain right through the weekend.

There is quite the runway for precipitation over the next four or five days stemming from a mix of snow, freezing rain and rain that can be seen stretching across North America. Newfoundland will see a varied amount of all three of those conditions, ranging across regions, while Labrador remains cool enough to stick to the snow.

It all begins as snow makes landfall on the west and south coast of Newfoundland. Temperatures are subzero Wednesday evening through the overnight, so that timeframe has the snow spreading across the island with limited flurries landing in the Metro region.

By sun rise, the temperatures are starting to come up as well thanks to the winds shifting east and southeast. As a result, the freezing rain portion of the system begins on the south coast. This too spreads as temperatures inch towards the zero mark across Newfoundland, pushing the snow further north and into Labrador. Labrador as a whole can except 10-20 cm with Nain being the exception, welcoming just 2-5 cm.

The system finishes with the back end bringing rain, spending more time on the south and eastern portion of Newfoundland. When it’s all said and done, the messy Thursday ends with the estimated snow and rain totals shown below. In terms of the rain, the green numbers reflect rain being more prevalent than freezing rain while the pink numbers show areas experiencing more freezing rain.

Friday sees return of snow, freezing rain and rain to Newfoundland

Then on Friday, we get to do it all again! This time the system moves west to east, fueled by a west wind cooling the land as it moves across, having rain in front of snow.

We’ll have more on both Thursday and Friday on NTV’s First Edition at 5:30 pm and the NTV Evening Newshour at 6:00 pm.
