Newfoundland and Labrador to thaw out of deep freeze into weekend

Weather

Ryan Harding, NTV Weather Centre

Friday starts pretty well equally as cold as Thursday across Newfoundland and Labrador. However, the day is spent slowly warming up before winds shift south into Saturday welcoming spring-like temperatures for the weekend.

Northwest wind continues cold spell into a sunny Friday morning across Newfoundland and Labrador

It’s been the consistent and wide-spread northwest winds that have brought the arctic air down from Labrador across Newfoundland and causing those bitter winds to drop the feels-like temperatures below the -20 mark. As Friday rolls on, the high-pressure system that has been clearing the skies will move along and the winds wind slowly shift to west, southwest and eventually arrive from the south. This will raise temperatures province-wide and you’ll no doubt feel the difference by Saturday morning. While the bulk of Friday will be spent exclusively under wide-open skies, the clouds begin to roll in just in time for the weekend.

Weekend brings rain to Newfoundland and snow to Labrador

Newfoundland will spend Saturday under sun and cloud. The winds will still be shifting from the southwest to direct south. The day-time highs range from about 0 to -2, feeling significantly warmer than Friday. Come Sunday, those temperatures spring board closer to the ten degree mark than the freezing mark for eastern Newfoundland, however, the day will be mainly spent under rain island-wide.

The weekend is flip flopped for Labrador, bringing the precipitation Saturday with sun and cloud reserved for Sunday. As you can see above, the temperatures are warming – but not warm enough to ward off the snow.

By Saturday morning, snow will be moving across Labrador West and making its way across the Big Land leaving behind 5-15 cm.
