Snow on the way for many this week

Monday gave a break from the wind province-wide and a break from the snow for the West Coast. Both will return Tuesday.

We aren’t going to see the record-breaking 56 cm dumping that stopped Toronto in it’s tracks this past weekend, but that system is going to cross over our province and by end of day Wednesday, all regions will have experienced accumulating snow.

It all kicks off with the snow making landfall on the South Coast right before the 8 am mark. Metro and Avalon as a whole can anticipate flurries picking up at this hour, with the snow rate increasing as the afternoon rolls on. The heaviest snow for Metro, Avalon, Clarenville and Bonavista Peninsula is expected between 3 and 5 pm.

By noon, the snow has reached most of Central and will be working it’s way up the West Coast. These regions seem to be experience the outer bands of the system more frequently than the eastern side of the island, so the end of day totals reflect that with an island-wide range of 10-25 cm.

As the snow is trending north across Newfoundland, coastal Labrador will see snow make landfall and start it’s journey across the Big Land in it’s entirety.

It takes the day, but by evening, the snow will reach Happy Valley-Goose Bay and take until the overnight hours and sunrise for Labrador West to be in the thick of it. When it is all said and done, Labrador as a whole can expect between 10-15 cm, with Southern Labrador expecting a second snowy day on Wednesday.

You can see from the three-day forecast above, that portions of the island are looking to add to the snow total on Wednesday and even into Thursday as well. North winds from the coast of Labrador push that system into Newfoundland, but run into stronger west winds, stalling that system on the upper half of the island. That west wind also drops temperatures across the regions it brushes – almost keeping the province at an equal state, temperature-wise, on Wednesday specifically.

Regions like Southern Labrador, Northern Peninsula and the Baie Verte Peninsula may be able to double their totals on Wednesday after Tuesday’s snow, with limited totals across most of Central. We’ll have more on Wednesday’s anticipated conditions on First Edition at 5:30 and the NTV Evening Newshour at 6:00.
