Police arrests prohibited driver, launches drug impaired investigation

Justice, News

Clarenville RCMP arrested two women early Sunday morning, after police stopped a driver operating under a Canada-wide ban and located illicit drugs and paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Jan. 4, Clarenville RCMP received a call from a concerned citizen about a prohibited driver operating a vehicle in the area of Goobies. The driver was known to the caller and is currently prohibited from driving Canada-wide.

A short time later, the vehicle was located in Sunnyside, and a traffic stop was conducted. The driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, and a search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of suspected methamphetamines, contraband tobacco and paraphernalia associated with drug use.

She also showed signs of impairment by drugs and was transported to hospital in Clarenville where she was provided with a demand for a blood sample. Police are waiting on the results of lab testing to determine of a charge of impaired driving is appropriate.

The driver is expected to appear in court in March 2026 on charges of operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, failing to comply with a probation order, and possession of a controlled substance.

Her vehicle was seized and impounded by police.

The lone passenger in the vehicle — a 35-year-old woman — was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. She was released from custody and will appear in provincial court at a future date.
