Holyrood RCMP charge driver with flight from police, impaired operation

Justice, News

Holyrood RCMP arrested a 36-year-old man for flight from police and impaired operation after he attempted to evade a police checkpoint on Route 10 in Witless Bay on Saturday night.

Around 11:00 p.m. on Dec. 27, officers with the Holyrood detachment and Traffic Services East were checking vehicles near the intersection of Route 10 and Route 13 when an oncoming vehicle drove through the police checkpoint without slowing.

An officer pursued the vehicle, which pulled into a nearby quick service restaurant drive through. The driver attempted to exit the vehicle and enter the neighbouring store, but was stopped by police. He showed clear signs of impairment by alcohol and was arrested for failing to stop for a peace officer and impaired operation.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a weapon, unsealed cannabis products and contraband tobacco. The vehicle was seized and impounded by police.

The driver, a 36-year-old Conception Bay South man, was also operating with a suspended driver’s licence. He was provided with a demand for breath samples and transported to the nearby detachment, where he provided two samples in excess of the legal limit.

He was released from custody and is expected to appear in provincial court in February 2026 to face charges of operation while impaired, operation while impaired over 80mg% and obstruction of a police officer.

He was also issued tickets for operating a motor vehicle while suspended under the Highway Traffic Act and for having open cannabis on his person while driving a motor vehicle under the Cannabis Control Act.
