Driver flees from Baie Verte RCMP checkpoint, impaired driver arrested
A 35-year-old impaired driver was arrested by Baie Verte RCMP on Saturday night after attempting to avoid a police checkpoint on Route 410.
At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Dec. 6, officers were conducting a checkpoint in the community of Baie Verte when the operator of an approaching vehicle failed to stop for an officer. The driver instead accelerated through the checkpoint, nearly striking the police officer.
Officers located and conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle as it arrived at the operator’s residence.
The driver exhibited clear signs of alcohol impairment. The 35-year-old Baie Verte woman was arrested and transported to the detachment, where she provided breath samples that were two and a half times the legal limit.
Her license was suspended, and vehicle was seized and impounded. She will appear in court at a later date to answer to criminal charges of flight from police, operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and operation of a motor vehicle while over 80 mg% of alcohol.
