Town of Bonavista issues emergency water ban

Local News, News

The Town of Bonavista is issuing an Emergency Water Ban effective immediately due to anchor ice formation at the Long Pond water intake. The town says this is a serious and urgent situation, and it needs the full cooperation of all residents.

What’s happening?
Anchor ice which is submerged ice that forms on the bottom of ponds or riverbeds and attaches to underwater structures, has built up at our water intake. This type of ice can accumulate quickly and completely block the flow of water into the system.

At this time, no new water is entering our water supply. Once the current water tank is depleted, there will be no additional water available.

What you must do immediately:

  • Stop all non-essential water use
  • Avoid laundry, long showers, and dishwashing
  • Limit flushing
  • Turn off taps tightly
  • Conserve every drop possible

This Emergency Water Ban remains in effect until further notice. Updates will be provided as soon as new information becomes available.

The town thanked all residents for their immediate cooperation and understanding, and say taking action is critical to protecting the community’s water supply.
