Dinn asks MUN President for meeting on future of Harlow campus
Provincial NDP Leader Jim Dinn wrote to the President of Memorial University, Dr. Janet Morrison, today to request a meeting regarding the recent discussion regarding the possible sale of MUN’s Harlow Campus.
“As a retired teacher and past president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association I appreciate the importance of funding Memorial University so it can continue to deliver a quality post-secondary,” Dinn wrote. “The importance of Memorial University to the NL NDP was evident in our election platform. The university is a public good and an economic driver for the province.”
Dinn says although the university is facing financial deficits and increasing demands, he hopes its decisions remain centered on student experience and on preserving the programs that attract and retain students. He adds that his own experience studying at Harlow while completing his degree demonstrates the campus’ continued value and purpose for MUN students.
“Harlow Campus seems to have taken centre stage in this most recent deficit debate as headlines indicate Memorial University is preparing to sell off the campus. I would strongly urge Memorial University not to divest itself of the campus,” Dinn wrote. “I did my teaching internship in Harlow in 1981. It was transformative, not only for the teaching experience and immersion in the British education system, but also for the social and cultural connections.”
